Anna's parents had founded a small farm on the east side of town in 1849; they named it "Fridley" after their son, Fridley Olsen, who had been born there in 1824. Facing strong competition from nearby towns such as Maplewood and Apple Valley, Fridley began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century with an expanding population that included craftsmen and farmers as well as miners and fishermen. Manufacturing also began to take off in Fridley during this time; by 1900, it was home to several businesses including a flour mill, a saddlery shop, a bakery, a harness shop and three banks. During World War I (1914-18), much of what is now downtown Fridley was destroyed by fire; however, due to donations by local citizens and volunteer firefighters both before and after the war, reconstruction began quickly which included new housing developments on both sides of Main Street between First Avenue South and Sixth Avenue North. In 1916-17 bacon production started up again in downtown Fridley when John Wohlman set up his first hogskin factory there; this industry continued until around 1950 when production shifted to pork products elsewhere in the area because of advances in genetics that made Pigs II more efficient at growth than traditional hogskins. In 1970-71Fridleys high school football team won its first state championship under head coach Rick Padden with quarterback Donny Sheahan throwing for 462 yards on 31 completions out of 52 attempts en route to four touchdowns against neighboringMaplewood High School; subsequent years saw multiple state championships for Fridy’s varsity boys soccer program (1978-82) while girls lacrosse became organized within the community starting in 1984 – something that would continue through most recent incarnations until 2012 when girls Lacrosse moved back into town hall following construction projects being completed around Main Street which would include an expanded sports complex along with an additional park/pool near Seventh Avenue North
