Fridley is named for Danish immigrant Ole Fridtjof Nansen and his wife Maren (née Rasmussen). The town was platted in 1881 by Ole Nansen and his brother-in-law Rasmus Clausen. The first post office was established in 1882; it was renamed Fridley in 1886. The townsite had been part of New Ulm Township since 1880. Fridley became a city on January 1, 2009 when it merged with neighboring Bloomington to form the Bloomfield Park Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Fridley's history can be traced back to 1851 when Rasmus Clausen acquired 640 acres (246 ha) of land east of present-day Interstate 94 near what is now the intersection of Nicollet Avenue and South University Avenue. He named it "Fridley" after his home country, Denmark. In 1881, Ole Nansen purchased land adjacent to Clausen's farm from him for $2 per acre ($ as of 2019). This property lay within present day Bloomington but Clifton Heights outside of town boundaries until 1893 when it annexed into Bloomington as well . Fridley incorporated as a village on November 3rd 1898 following approval from the territorial government which at that time included Alexandria township and parts of rural St Cloud County north of Stillwater Lake Shore Drive . On July 8th 1906 voters approved incorporation by referendum with a total vote of 546 to 128 opposition due largely to zoning concerns about how much development could be done without affecting open space . After years debate over whether or not to annex into larger cities such as Minneapolis or St Paul, finally on April 14th 1915 Fridley annexed into Minneapolis creating what is today one half of what would become the Twin Cities metropolitan area
