Fridley, Minnesota is a town in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name of Fridley comes from Swedish immigrants who named it after their farm which they called "Fridlund". Fridley is located in the northwest corner of Anoka County and is bordered by Minneapolis to the east and south, Hennepin County to the north, and Apple Valley to the west. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in 1824 when prospectors led by Pierre Chouteau discovered gold near what would become Fridley. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Fridley. In 1836, a store was built on what is now First Street and Main Ave., becoming one of the first business districts in Fridley. A post office was established at Fridley in 1846, and renamed it Moorhead in 1849 because it had been decided that Moorhead should be an independent village since it layadjacent to present-day Wadena Township on Lake Superior's eastern shoreline. In 1870, mining began around what became known as "the Cement Hill" due to its abundance of limestone – this soon led to other mines being opened such as Maple Ridge (1871), Thorne (1875), Grosvenor Mines (1877), Clearwater Mines (1879), Crystal City Mines (1881), Drake Mine (1901) and Birch Mine(1902). In 1902-03 a smelting plant was built at Clearwater Mines for manufacturing copper sulfide ore from nearbyStill Waters ore bodies; this process produced valuable metal coins which were used until World War II. In 1907-08 a sawmill was built adjacent to Clearwater Mines; this mill processed lumber from local forests into logs that were then sold by wagonloads or drove downriver for shipment across ice bridges into Superior River Ironworks where they were turned into rails or other products. Banks & Trust Company opened its doors here on October 14th 1928 with $10 000 capitalization; today bank has assets totaling over $200 million.
