The early settlers of Fridley were farmers and their families lived close together on large plots of land that they cultivated with horses, mules, cows, pigs, sheep and chickens. They raised cornmeal for flour or feed for their livestock and hunted game around their property. Later generations turned their attention to manufacturing products such as hats or shoes. From time to time local businesses have been established such as a grocery store or post office. In 1957, when Minnesota became an autonomous state within the United States of America, Fridley became one of its municipalities. At that time it had a population of approximately 20 people living in six small homes scattered along Main Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue East (now Fourth Avenue). In 1970 the municipality annexed portions of neighboring townships which added another 10 residents to our population total; however we continue to operate as an individual village governed by a board of trustees elected by villagers from among themselves subject only to municipal laws governing elections at village level rather than state law governing municipalities with populations over 20 people
Fridley was founded in 1854 by John and Mary Fridley. It became a city in 1906 and was named for the Fridleys. In 1920, it annexed the neighboring town of Saint Paul.
