Fridley was founded in 1851 by Danish immigrants, Ole and Mette Fridley. The town is named for Ole Fridley, a member of the first permanent Norwegian settler group in what is nowMinnesota. The family ran a grocery store and post office until the mid-19th century. In 1892, businessman Morten Olsen started selling ice cream from his truck on Main Street. Fridley's population rapidly grew after World War I, reaching 10,000 by 1925. After Olson's death in 1928, the townspeople began to purchase their own automobiles and built their own streetcars. Business slowed during World War II as the war redirected resources away from towns such as Fridley; however, the community rallied around its role in helping support soldiers and civilians during the war. The population hit 20,000 again in 1985 but has since declined slightly due to various factors including suburbanization and an increase in commuting to larger cities. In 2006-2007, residents voted to annex part of neighboring Bloomington into Fridley; this annexation increasedFridley's population by 2%.
