Fridley, Minnesota is a small town located in Ramsey County, Minnesota. It was founded in 1881 and has been the seat of the municipality since 1898. The population was 5,814 at the 2000 census. The only hospital in Fridley is the Ramsey County Medical Center which serves about 350 patients per month. The town was first settled by Norwegian immigrants who came to search for land after their ship failed to find a spot on America's East Coast that would be suitable for them. They started out looking for a place where they could run their farms and raise livestock. The first post office was founded in 1881 and mail service began operations from Fridley on July 1, 1886. Fridley became a village in 1898 when it amalgamated with neighboring Unadilla and South Stonington to form what is now Ramsey County. By 1902, Fridley had a school, firehouse, grocery store, Protestant church (built 1892), bank (1896),and two Methodist churches (built 1902). In 1912, city officials decided that it would be more efficient to have one central government control all aspects of life within the new municipality so Fridley became an incorporated village again under city ordinance No. 2 of 1912. In 1954, Fridley annexed unincorporated communities of Hibbing and Maplewood as part of its growth into what is now its largest suburbia-style community by area within the county boundaries today with over 100 thousand residents living within its borders without ever having served as part of any larger political entity other than being annexed into another municipality or county during this time period!
