Fridley is a small town in the far northern Minnesota county of Ramsey. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It was once an agricultural center for cattle and grain production, but has since become a bedroom community for the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Fridley's history dates back to 1856 when it was named after Lieutenant Colonel John Fridley of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who had come to help survey territory for a new state in Dakota Territory. The name stuck and the town grew rapidly thanks to its location on a major route between downtown Minneapolis and rural areas to the south and west. The discovery of oil in 1900 led to rapid industrialization in Fridley, which began with oil refineries and manufacturing plants built along State Highway 6 near present day Interstate 94 (I-94). The boom period ended during World War II because of wartime Production Tax shortages that increased labor costs; however, many businesses have continued to operate into today's era including several clothing stores, a gas station/mini-mart, two banks (one still open), three restaurants (two Chinese), one hair salon, two Sheetaland ballroom dancers Club Latitude Forty Eighteen Nineties Dancing Shoes store and several churches among others. Fridley was founded in 1872 by Norwegian immigrants, and it is the only town in Hastings County. Fridley first reported on the map as an unincorporated community in 1872. It was annexed by Hastings County in 1912. The post office at Fridley was established in 1893, and its name changed to Hastings on July 1, 1912. The first store at Fridley opened in 1892, and it continued to operate until 1955. In 1919, a gas station opened along US-24 near the present day intersection of University Avenue and State Road 2A (later known as I-94). The store closed in 1995 but still remains standing as a historic building located within the boundaries of Fridley. In 1925, a Masonic lodge was organized here with brothers from Minneapolis under leadership of Lodge Master John Auldt Christensen. As part of this development, Fridley also became home to what is now called "theOriginalDavenport Brewery" which began producing beer commercially for sale here beginning retail operations on October 16th 1928 (a trade show being held that year led to production moving from Minneapolis). This brewery operated until 1978 when it finally closed due to economic decline nationally; however fond memories continue across many village residents who visit today for tours or enjoy samples while browsing through local art galleries!
