Fridley's history begins with Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1871 from Norway to start a new life in what is nowMinnesota. They were greeted by other immigrant groups such as Germans, Swedes and Irish also settling in what became Hennepin County. A post office called Fridley was established in 1872, and remained open until 1959. The first settler in Fridley was Ole Olsen who built his home on present day Fourth Street near the intersection of Third Avenue and South Seventh Street. Olsen would later gift land to the town for its growth which soon included mills, churches, schools and businesses that developed around it; Today most of these buildings still stand today including First Methodist Church which served as both a church and local school beginning in 1876 before becoming known as Metropolitan University after being acquired by MN State University (later Minnesota State University) in 1912). The early residents of Fridley were very active involved with their community both within and outside of their homes; they helped form local organizations such as the YMCA (1872), Odd Fellows Lodge #2 (1875), American Legion Post #10 (1877), Presbyterian Church (1900s)and many more through their contributions to society or politics locally or nationally including serving on various boards or committees throughout their careers-. Many people who lived here during this time have gone on to make significant contributions not only to their hometown but alsoto larger communities across America- such as Ole Olsen himself who would serve terms on multiple boards representing different institutions within his hometown before retiring at age 95 just prior to his death from heart attack back home several months ago- making him one of Fargo’s longest living former mayors!
