Fridley is a community in the Minnesota Twin Cities metropolitan area, located between Minneapolis and St. Paul. The population was 12,930 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St.Paul–Bloomington Combined Statistical Area. The name "Fridley" comes from Danish immigrant Ole Fridtjof Nansen's farmstead on what is now the eastern edge of town. The first settler in what is now Fridley was George Henningsen in 1854; he and his family founded a small cabin on a bluff overlooking what would become Fridley Township. In 1857, Ole Nansen arrived from Denmark with his family and started to cultivate land around present day Brainerd Road and Minden Creek in present day Fridley Township. He named his new settlement after himself, Ole Fridtjof Nansen Land (meaning "Ole's Farm"). In 1861, George Henningsen sold his share of the farm to Johannes Christensen for $1,200 cash plus 10 acres of land east of Brainerd Road where he erected a log cabin as their home known today as Henningsenskie Manor or Old Home Place. In 1865, Jens Christiansen married Lillie Rasmussen who had come over with him from Sweden two years earlier and settled near by on Hermanson Island along Red Lake before eventually moving to Iowa City, IA in 1868. From here she took up residence with her sister Olga Rasmussen until her death in 1902 situated just east of where I-94 currently meets County Rd./Old Town Rd./Henningsenskie Manor Rd., about 4 miles north of current town site (the old Dutch name for it). After Lillie Rasmussen’s death her sister began arrangements for burial outside town limits so that her remains could be interred beside those of their mother who had died there many years earlier also under similar circumstances—before Swedes moved into this area). On July 1st 1893 Rev John Prentice became pastor at the First Lutheran Church which had been established then adjacent to Henningsenskie Manor but continued services within town limits until 1912 when they relocated to newly built Morrison United Methodist Church across Second Street from Griggs Mill (where they remain today). Fridley is a small town in Isabella County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,686 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name Fridley comes from Norwegian settlers who came to this area in 1855 and named it "Fridtjofersdal". The first post office in Fridley was established in 1858. In 1870, the town had a population of 350 people and consisted of just two blocks of land north of what is now First Avenue South. The towns growth was due to its location on the River Saint Mary and its abundance of natural resources such as watermelons, corn, wheat and soybeans. In 1909, Fridley merged with neighboring Eden Prairie to form one municipality called Fridley-Eden Prairie. The name change may have been due to problems with getting an exact spelling for both municipalities (e.g., "Fridleys"). In 1920, another merger occurred when Fridley became part of nearby Hennepin County; however this merger did not result in any new municipal boundaries until 1965 when all Isabella County municipalities were combined into one government called Hennepin County Municipality. In 1971, residents voted to remove the last remaining references to "Eden Prairie" from their civic documents and replace them with the more common name "Fridley." This decision reflects growing awareness among residents that there are multiple municipalities with the same name within Hennepin County - not just Fridley-Eden Prairie. Today, Fridley remains a small community characterized by its close knit relationship with its neighbors across several sectors including agriculture (on which it relies heavily), education (through local schools), hospitality (based around three nearby hotels) and retail (including two convenience stores).
