The town grew rapidly during World War II as aluminum production increased in nearby La Crosse; however, post-war growth stalled as few manufacturing jobs disappeared and land values fell. In the 1990s Fridley introduced downtown shopping districts and embarked on a $100 million redevelopment campaign that aimed to make it more walkable, public transportation accessible, and attract new businesses. Despite this progress, Fridley's economic prospects remain bleak; its unemployment rate stood at 10% in 2009.[1] Fridley's history began with Norway's arrival in America some eighty years earlier than any other European group. For many people living near Lake Superior, early contact with America was an exciting adventure story filled with opportunity for exploration and new experiences. Many Norwegians settled along Minnesota's east coast because they were lured away by promises of good land and fertile soil – promises that turned out to be falseuresponible to their descendants who arrived here much later than their forerunners. In 1858 entrepreneurs among these early pioneers organized what became known as the "Norwegian Pioneer Company" to purchase 160 acres (65 ha) of land north of present-day Interstate 5 on which they erected a log cabin known today as Robinson House.[2][3] This initial edition of what would become Fridley was located on what is now called Dakota Avenue across from White Sands Lake;[4] however, it soon became apparent that this site could not support such high levels of population growth given its meager water resources or lack thereof for irrigation purposes! So instead of selling additional acreage around Robinson House or moving inland until further notice,[5] Management decided to build something entirely new: a townsite! It should be noted that townsites at this time were typically planned around areas where goods could be transported easily like mills or railroads – thus giving residents easy access to goods while also providing some degree of self-sufficiency since there was no market for goods produced outside the townspeople’s immediate vicinity! The first mayoralty election held on October 14th 1858 showed how important townsite planning had become: George Brown handily won reelection against John Fenton [6][7][8] while incumbent William Hennin conceded victory due to his health conditions following two years serving as Mayor without compensation![9][10]) A decade later when Captain Julius Nordland came ashore from his ship “Golden Eagle” off shore midway through winter Loaded up with provisions he needed but didn’t know where else to go he set camp next door informally under present day First Street Bridge which still stands today just southwest of Town Hall Park! From Nordland we got our first idea about having a permanent settlement here so we started building homesites – one by one! We named them all after saints (John, Jesus Christ etc.) Some homes were built quickly others took longer but eventually everyone had plentyofplace To call home 🙂 After several failed efforts township officials finally realized that if they wanted anything resembling an urban center there would have to be better water availability & infrastructure & maybe evenIntroducing electric lights thereby creating perhaps oneOfTheMost significant Developments In OurTown History 😃
Fridley was founded in 1873 by farmers J.C. Fridley and H.M. Bemis. The town was named for Captain John Fridley, who helped carry supplies to Fort Snelling during the Dakota War of 1862-63. By 1897, the population had grown to 1,500 and Fridley became a city on February 14, 1898 when it was incorporated as a result of an act of the Minnesota Legislature.
