Fridley is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 26,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first ammunition store in what is now Fridley opened on October 4, 1854 by Wm. Hinton and Associates as a small shop on the corner of Fourth and Elm Streets. In 1860 Jno. Ransom opened his own store on First Street which became known as "Ransom's Armory." In 1863 Abel Armas established an armory and rifle range south of town on Fourth Street near Old State Road 362. This range prospered until 1871 when it was destroyed by fire; however, thanks to insurance money from Armas' business partners, he rebuilt it and named it the "Armas Arms & Ammunition Establishment." In 1865 John Fenton boughtout Abel Armas' interest in the business and continued to operate it under that name until 1892 when he changed it to Fenton's Arsenal & Armament stores Ltd.,later renamed Woolworths Incorporated (Woolworths). This company manufactured firearms, ammunition, fishing tackle and other items including grenades during World War I for American munitions manufacturers such as Bethlehem Steel Company and General Electric Company. On December 8, 1924 local citizens met at City Hall to charter a new school district with land adjoining Woolworths Arsenal & Armament stores Ltd., later renamed Fridley-Hennepin School District No 1 after nearby Fridley High School (now Hennepin County Central High School). The new school district had two schools: one for boys and one for girls; also included were several acres of land north of town used for industrial purposes such as a sugar beet farm; these lands passed into the hands of the school district through purchases or condemnation by various parties following World War II including Clifton Homes Corporation which built much of current day Fridley Middle School (formerly Woodbury Middle School) on this land between 1951-1957.

Fridley's first settlers arrived in 1851 when Andrew Wills and his band were traveling through Minnesota on their way to Dakota Territory. They named their new community "Fridley" after Fergus Falls in Canada where they had been trading goods for furs since early 1840s. The town was platted in 1854 by John Smedley, who owned the land that includes present-day Fridley Township and much of what now lay within Ramsey County. The first post office opened in 1856; it was renamed Fridley after Andrew Wills' farmhouse thereabouts. In 1870, Reva Gillem became pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Fridleysville; she would remain so until her death in 1902%. As with most churches throughout America during that time period, she raised money for missionary work through Sabbath schools and other religious activities by selling subscriptions to her newspaper—the Pioneer Woman's Paper—printed weekly at her home from September 21 to December 15th). By 1880, Fridleysville boasted a hotel (the Hotel de Russie), two stores (Pioneer Hardware & Dry Goods Store and Joes Tavern), two churches (First Presbyterian and Second Presbyterian), three schools (including one taught by Mrs. Gillem herself), five families living alone or with six others sharing an apartment or cottage, seventy people employed full time year roundplus another hundred visiting daily or monthly; twenty-eight residents served as school trustees; thirty-seven residents lost their jobs during peacetime but continued to live there because they could not leave due to military service or bans on owning property within city limits
