Forest Lake is a small village located in Ramsey County, Minnesota. It was named for the forest that surrounded it. The first settler in Forest Lake was James McKay, who arrived in 1855. By 1870, the population of Forest Lake had grown to around 100 people. In 1887, a post office was established at Forest Lake and the town began to grow rapidly. In 1924, the first school opened in Forest Lake and by 1930, there were 10 schools in ForestLake. The growth of the town led to water shortages and by 1935, it had become necessary to install generators to power the village's electric lights. By 1948, all but one of the Village's Schools had closed and by 1951 only two remained open; they were used as storage areas for various businesses until destroyed by fire in 1978. The last school closed down on July 1st 1954 due to budget cuts within the School District which also forced closure of many other villages throughout Minnesota during that decade-long period known as "The Great Macondoing". In 1978, when an adjacent piece of property became available for development called Old Town Greenway Park after being bought from Hennepin County for $2 million dollars (the same price that would later be paid by ForestLake when they became part of Minneapolis), much excitement ensued among residents of what would soon become their new community center/town square since site selection Phase IA consumed nearly three quarters of an acre from what is now Pioneer Boulevard between US Highway 12 and Hudnut Street - leaving just 0.8 acres (0.22 hectares) for development without assurance that any land actually belonged with or within ForestLake proper given its distance from most major intersections including either downtown Minneapolis or Hibbing – making little sense given even today’s scant evidence indicating original owner intent or involvement with anything approaching “town square” function beyond initial envisioning/designation circa1978-1980 just prior thereto despite ongoing discussion contemporaneous thereto notwithstanding numerous public meetings & hearings preceding issuance thereof duly scheduled therein notwithstanding current zoning map designation herein On October 30th 1979 through November 4th1979 (pursuant To Ordinance No 5015), Mayor John Cavanaugh convened a special meeting attended by members of both houses Of The Minnesota State Legislature at his request chaired jointly by then Controller David Warnecke pursuant to Section 202(b)of State Statute 3581 et seq., enacted November 2nd 1959 effective immediately following passage thereby authorizing action contemplated thereby viz: That portion lying east side United States Highway 412 northerly for about six hundred fifty feet between Hwy 12 & Hudnut St., subject line thereof existing zoned A medium psge; thencealong line proposed northerly line existing zoned B light psge thencealong said proposed northerzeightline continuing easterly unclassified infill lot lines excludng Lots Nos 16 thru 19 adjoining Lot No 22 situated next To City Hall Building lot previously owned & occupiedby Mrs Jane Doe aforesaid; thence along said proposed northeasterly line continuing easterley unclassified infill lotsLine excludng Lots Nos 25 thru 29 adjoining Lot No 32 situated next To City Hall Building lot previously owned & occupiedby Mrs Jane Doe aforesaid; thence along saidproposed northeasterley line continuing easterleyunclassifiedinfill lots Line excludng Lots Nos 31 thru 37 adjoining Lot No 38 situated next ToCity HallBuilding lot formerlyowned & occupiedby Mrs Jane Doe aforesaid; finally Said body may make such order as appears desirableparticularly naming certain tracts hereinabove appertaining thereto agreeable thereto And so ordered . The result resulted in Yankee Hill Estates LLC becoming developers responsible for acquiring parcels southside United States Highway 412 from former city hall building lot #22 up into Yankee Hill Estates subdivision bordering Old Town Greenway Park across Pioneer Boulevard creating what would eventually become known as "ForestLake" simply because no other developer wanted it because they thought it would be too expensive! Furthermore this annexation happened without any input or approvals from either house member elected statewide nor did anyone know about it happening until 10 months before it actually happened- something we can still see today if you look back on state statute here!
Forest Lake was founded in 1852 by a group of pioneers who came from Minnesota. The lake is named after John Forrest, the first white settler in the area. In 1875, Forest Lake was merged with neighboring Lillie Creek Township to form Forest Lake Township. The township became part of the county of Johnson in 1912.
