Forest Lake is a small town in Cook County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 696 at the 2010 census. Forest Lake is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is bordered by St. Anthony Falls on the north and east, Forest Grove on the south, and Maplewood on the west. The first settlers in what is now Forest Lake were farmers who arrived in 1854 from Ohio. They named their land "Lake forest," after a large tract of forest near Cleveland, Ohio they had farmland adjoining. In 1871, a group of men from Thief River Falls established the village of Forestville about two miles to the east of where present-day Forest Lake sits. The village grew rapidly because it served as an important transportation junction for goods being transported upriver to Minneapolis and downriver to Stroudsburg (now Roanoke Rapids). In 1915, when Forrest City was founded nearby by entrepreneurs looking for a new center for suburban development, both villages amalgamated into one municipality under its name. With its growing population and increasing needs for services like schools, fire departments, libraries, parks and water supplies within its boundaries—including becoming home to Twin Cities Rapid Transit's Blue Line—Forest Lake quickly became one of metro Minneapolis' most vibrant communities. During Prohibition–era America's heyday (1916-1921), many bootleggers made use of Forest Lake's plentiful lakeshore resources while running rackets out of nearby towns such as Hamline and Stillwater; these days spirits can still be bought at local convenience stores open late into the night.. In 1933–1934—the height of prohibition era gangsters operating throughout much rural Minnesota—a team led by syndicate boss Tony Salerno patronized this area during their Chicagowaukee venture; Salerno probably took refuge here with his family following his indictment that year on racketeering charges in New York City.. Boris Pasternak used some acreage northwest of current day Forest Lake as his private retreat during World War II before moving his operations to Russia; subsequent research has since revealed evidence that high quantities asbestos were found there . . . Some residents continue residing there today despite increased construction activity adjacent to their homes around Highway 169/State Highway 620 due to concerns over traffic noise from[sic] larger developments taking place just beyond their backyards; however others have chosen to move away or sell property within easy walking distance of employment opportunities in larger cities like downtown Minneapolis or Saint Paul
