In Forest Lake, Minnesota, there have been firearms with swivels for centuries. The first guns in the area were made with a design that allowed the shooter to rotate the gun's barrel around its axis. In addition to its agricultural base, ForestLake has become known for its Trout Unlimited program which encourages local fishermen to catch more fish than they ever thought possible while also providing education on how best to enjoy this delicious sport at home or at some of the many visitor centers located throughout the area

Forest Lake is a small town located in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. It was founded in 1871 by Swedish immigrants. Forest Lake is the original site of the University of Minnesota. The community has experienced growth and decline over the years, with a population of about 30 residents in 2010. The first settlers to Forest Lake were Swedish immigrants who arrived from Uppsala, Sweden on July 4, 1851. They selected a location near the confluence of the Cedar and Minnehaha rivers for their new farmstead. The newcomers built log cabins and started a farmers’ cooperative to support their new community. In 1863, they erected a frame schoolhouse that served as the village's first courthouse. In 1871, ForestLake became an independent township when it was organized within Ramsey County. The following year, it annexed part of the neighboring town of Clearwaterville. By 1905, however, ForestLake's population had dwindled to 10 residents and its school district had merged with Clearwaterville's to form Clearwaterville-ForestLake School District No 2 (now known as Ramsey County Community College). A period of rapid growth followed World War II when people came to work at nearby Cold Spring Dam; however, this boom ended after 1945 when air quality concerns made mining operations uneconomical. A single family nucleus kept ForestLake going until the early 1990s; however local businesses have since closed or relocated outside of town during this time period because of shrinking populations and diminishing economic opportunities within town limits themselves (Lucea & Weibel 2003). postwar forestry helped drive forest land values up which then supported more retail activity downtown but also led to city services becoming less tailored towards citizens while big business monopolized public resources such as water supply and schools (Boyd 1984). This shift produced resentment among locals who felt they were being taken advantage by wealthier outsiders while losing control over their own communities unitarily and municipally (Fenton 2006). Despite efforts by some residents group such as "The Friends" in recent years to bridge differences between rich/poor/majority-minority neighborhoods within town limits,[1] these disparities continue today although there may be some hope for change given current trends in demographics (Kamski 2012b).
