The community's growth continued until the early 1900s when lumbering became popular in Minnesota and demand for logs grew quickly due to improved transportation methods such as railroads and trucks that made logging easier and faster than ever before. With more people living near woodlands for hunting or fishing opportunities, forest lakes also became places where mills could be built to processes lumber into products such as plywood or furniture
Forest Lake is located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and was founded in 1871. Forest Lake is a census-designated place (CDP) and has a population of 5,872 as of the 2010 Census. The CDP covers an area of 1,566 acres (621 hectares).
