For many years, Fergus Falls was an important commercial center in central Minnesota. Today, Fergus Falls is a sleepy little town with a population of only ninety-six residents. However, its history is worth keeping alive because it has some great examples of pioneer life in central Minnesota. One example is the fact that all six members of the Hennepin County Legislature were born in or near Fergus Falls during the nineteenth century. In addition, four mayors have been elected from Fergus falls since 1955: John Tisch (1955-1960), Lester Nordahl (1960-1964), Bud Peterson (1974-1978) and Don Hodges (1983-1985).

Fergus Falls was founded in 1854 by the Pembina Sioux. The town became a railroad town in the early 1900s, and currently has a population of over 14,000 people.
