As the population of Fergus Falls, Minnesota has grown and gun magazines have become more popular, so too has the history of these organizations. The first gun magazine in Fergus Falls was the Keystone Pistol Club, which was established in 1903. In 1924, the Citizens' Rifle Association (CRA) was created and began publishing its own magazine. The CRA also published a journal called "The Gunsmith" which served as a technical guide to handgun use. In 1934, the NRA folded due to financial problems. However, in 1935, new owners founded an NRA-affiliated organization called the Minnesota Gun Owners League (MGOL). MGOL published its own magazine called "The rifleman". This organization also operated a range in Fergus Falls. In 1937, another new owner founded an NRA-affiliated organization called the Western Federation of Minnesotans (WFM) which publishes its own magazine called "The frontier". In 1941, after World War II ended and America entered into a period of austerity, NRA members decided that they would no longer publish their magazines during this time because it would be difficult to maintain them without government assistance. However, WFM continued publication until 1951 when it merged with another NRA-affiliated group named the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). As part of this merger process NSSF changed its name to National Shooting Sports Foundation Incorporated (NSSFI). After NSSFI's incorporation there were several changes within the organization: firstly president Robert Jaffe left for personal reasons; secondly editor Charles Whitman resigned; thirdly executive director Lee Metcalfe became president; and fourthly vice president Marshall Herring became general manager. Finally in 1978 NSSFI placed full editorial control over all their publications under one roof at what is now known as G&H Publications Incorporated. Between 1978 and 1984 there were 10 presidents overall including 5 who held office for multiple terms: James Aiken (1978-1981), Wayne LaPierre (1982-1984), Don Freeman (1985-1988), Rick Sterling(1989-1991), Randall Larrison(1992-1994), Frederick Weese(1995-1997), Laurence Hickey(1998-2000) and John Boccia(2001 - 2002). Additionally between 1978 and 1984 there were 6 editors who led different sections across all nine publications: Charles Whitman Jr., Lee Metcalfe III., Randall Larrison III., Laurence Hickey III., John Boccia III., William Gorman and Jack Marriott Sr..

It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is located on Fergus River, east of downtown Minneapolis on the border of Ramsey County and Hennepin County. The first settler in present-day Fergus Falls was James Stevenson in 1859. In 1867, General David Dixon founded the Townsite Company here to build a town on land that he had purchased from former Dakota chief Red Cloud for $15,000 USD (). In 1870, The First National Bank opened in what is now downtown Fergus Falls. The first store in Fergus Falls was built by J C Kress & Sons as a hardware store and grocery store (now First National Bank building). By 1907 there were nineteen businesses in downtown Fergus Falls with an average daily business size of $2,500 (). By 1932 only two businesses remained: First National Bank and Pritchett's Grocery Store (). In 1938 Wm Ransome started production at his Armour production plant northeast of town on Highway 169 which soon brought industry to town and created over 100 jobs (). Downtown Fergus Falls became an important center for transportation after being connected by road toHennepin County through Interstate 35E. In 1954 when Interstate 395 replaced US Highway 169 as the main route into town, Downtown became an "inner ring" community unaffected by I-35E traffic congestion (). A new central library was completed in 1966 and served as the catalyst for further development including new housing developments along Main Street between Seventh Avenue SW and Eighth Avenue SW (). A second central library opened in 1996 but it closed within two years due to financial difficulties . In 2002 local developers began redevelopment of Historic District #1 adjacent to State Capitol Complex which included commercial/residential space totaling 1 million square feet ()
