Fergus Falls is a city in southern Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ramsey County. The community was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1881 as "Fergus Prairie". The name may be derived from the Fjords of Norway or from Gaelic terms meaning "the headwaters of the river" or "valley". The town site was platted in 1885 and named for General James Fergus, who had fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as U.S. Minister to Chile. In 1888, a post office called Fergus Prairie was established and remained in operation until 1960; it was moved to its present location adjacent to the current city limits on May 25, 1961. In 1898, when Minneapolis-St Paul annexed part of south Ramsey County, it included what are now parts of east Ramsey and west Fargo counties; however, only east Ramsey County became a part of Minneapolis-St Paul proper (and thus would be covered by this article) on January 1, 1901. As a result of this annexation, all inhabitants within eastern Ramsey County were reclassified as "towns", although they still retain their founding names: Fergus Prairie (now downtown), East Grand Rapids (west side), Maplewood (south side), Willowbrook (north side). Population growth began to slowdown around World War II due to declines in agricultural production and travel costs; however, growth resumed during the Korean War because military needs brought people into town more than had before. After that war's end population grew slowly again until reaching 5,829 by 2010 census estimate. Today's population consists mostly of retirees and students from nearby universities or other large metropolitan areas who have chosen to live near urban centers but keep some connection with rural life through farm land\/livestock operations etc.; nevertheless there are still a few working farmers within easy reach for those wanting subsistence agriculture without all the hassle/time commitment associated with larger commercial operations Today's economy generally depends upon services such as education and health care which have become increasingly important due to advancing technology which has made many jobs available outside traditional industries such as manufacturing or transportation

Fergus Falls was founded in 1854 as a trading post on an important route between Minneapolis and St. Paul. The post was abandoned in 1855 when gold became available in nearby Duluth. In 1857 Fergus Falls became part of Dakota Territory under United States rule following the cession ofMinnesota by Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, Fergus Falls incorporated as a town under Iowa law and received its own courthouse and jail facilities that remain today. The town's first school opened in 1870 and was soon replaced by a more modern facility that still stands today at 214 E 2nd Street (renamed Main Street in 1915). During World War II, Fergus Falls played an important role as a production center for military items such as munitions for America's war effort; however, most of these activities were discontinued after 1945 due to economic decline within town limits. Fergus Falls has since regained some former industrial activity but it has been largely relegated to service roles such as retail trade and information technology since then
