Morgan made his fortune in Encyclopedia Britannica by publishing a volume called "The Prairie States." He donated land for a railroad station and built a home there which he used as his headquarters until his death in 1916. In 1923, Fergus Falls became one of the first townships in Minnesota to be organized into a city when it seceded from Hennepin County and became its own municipality under the name of "Fergus Falls." The current incarnation of downtown began development when Rice University bought property along I-94 south of town and started construction on what would become their main campus buildings; complete with undergraduate halls, graduate halls and laboratories.Rice University website In 2006, Mayor John Lismore unveiled plans for what would become known as "Ferguson Square" at city center – an area that would include office space, retail stores and residential units.
