Farmington is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located about 25 miles south of Minneapolis. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Mankato, MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Farmington were farmers from Sweden who arrived in 1851 and began to grow corn and other crops. In 1872, the first post office was established in Farmington, and by 1900, there were five churches in Farmington—twoMethodist and three Lutheran—plus a dozen businesses including one sawmill and several stores. By 1920, the population had grown to 1,500 people; by 1940 it had reached 2,500; by 1960 it had reached 4,000; and by 2000 it had reached 6,000 people. In 1959-1960, farmlands on both sides of Interstate 94 were designated as Rural Assistance Land for Agricultural Development (RAAD). This program allowed for land that would be used for farming purposes with no need for building or infrastructure beyond what was needed for driving tractor trailers over the roadbeds. The areas being developed included much of downtown Farmington as well as parts of northside Minneapolis which are now suburbs of Minneapolis. One result of this program was that many farms were abandoned or converted into housing developments during the 1960s-1970s when new homes became more available on larger plots than they could have been on smaller farms where land alone would have met their needs. Today much of downtown Farmington still contains examples of older buildings dating back to before RAAD became effective while other parts contain newer buildings built after RAAD went into effect which provide grocery store/restaurant space as well as offices such as those located near Interstate 94 eastbound exit 17A (Hennepin County Road #2). The University Campus area also contains various commercial buildings attached to single story Academic Buildings which date back to when Farmington State College operated out side its original campus location on Hennepin Avenue between Seventh Street - now known as Midtown Boulevard - and Eighth Street - now known as Riverside Drive - just northwest of I-94 along Hennepin County Road #2 between Maplewood Avenue SE (now US Highway 12) and Nicollet Avenue SE (now Loop 16E). Many Federal agencies including National Institutes Of Healthwere headquartered here until downsizing caused their move westward after World War II . There has been recent movement towards redevelopment/renewal with plans underway to construct large mixed-use projects encompassing most or all old agricultural properties within blocks radius around I-694 & Nicollet Ave SE
