Farmington, Minnesota is a small town in the State of Minnesota. The population was 7,897 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ramsey County and the largest city in Ramsey County by population. Farmington is located on the eastern border of Ramsey County and is bordered by Cook County to the east, Morrison County to the south, and Elk River Township to the west. The city has a metropolitan area with a population of over 100,000 people. The first permanent residents in what became Farmington were Swedes who founded what was then called Fergus Falls in 1854. A post office was established there in 1856, and by 1870 it had become a village. In 1872, when Ramsey County was organized, Farmington became its county seat. The current courthouse was built between 1911 and 1913; it replaced an earlier structure that had been damaged in a fire two years earlier. In 1925, South Dakota moved its capital from Pierre to Topeka because of budget cuts caused by World War I; however, Topeka never fully adopted South Dakota's system of government which placed more emphasis on township mayors than governor or legislators. As a result, Farmington continued to have mayoral control over most aspects of local life until 1971 when this power was transferred back to township mayors through legislation passed by the state legislature

Today both counties have over 100,000 residents combined; they are both considered very densely populated areas within their respective states. As highways have drawn people away from rural areas to metropolitan areas such as Fargo or Minneapolis-St Paul, so too has farmINGTON grown rapidly along with it – currently accounting for nearly two-thirds (64%)of all jobs statewide reported by US News & World Report citing employment within commuting distance to work.[20][21][22] One significant factor behind this growth has been railroad development – early settlers were primarily farmers who transported their crops to markets in nearby Minneapolis or St Paul; however, when railways came through townspeople began buying property along them for housing developments and other types of businesses that would be developed around them such as mills or hospitals etcetera – these developments often coincided with new routes mainline trains had coming through town (. This provided a continuous flow of resources which helped contribute significantly to overall growth). Today’s downtownBusiness district is home to several large banks including United States Steel Corporation as well as dozens smaller institutions such as HCRMC/USD2/First National Bank/Target/JCPenney/UPS Store/KFC/Midway Clothing Store/, Dairy Queen/(Best Buy)/Piecemeal Pizza Place/, Stone Way Golf Club/, WFAN FM/. In addition there are numerous retail stores (~40+) clustered around main thoroughfares like Main Street (), Dakota Avenue (), Grand Avenue () & Cedar Avenue (). These streets form what can be called an urban core which offers much cultural diversity than what may be found elsewhere within town limits
Farmington was founded in 1881 by John and Lula Kapp. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was platted in 1882. It grew rapidly, reaching its peak with a population of around 300 people in 1912. However, the town declined after World War I and the Great Depression. In the 1950s, Farmington began to rebound as a bedroom community for Minneapolis-St. Paul. However, the area has since lost much of its economic importance due to suburban growth and new transportation options such as I-35W and MnRTC buses.
