In 1853, General George Armstrong Custer and his men were on their way from Battle Creek to Fort Snelling when they came across a Sioux camp near what is now Farmington. When they arrived, there were only 10 Indians left in the camp. The rest had been killed by Custer's troops. In 1868, James Fenton founded a flour mill in Farmington and started exporting flour to other parts of the United States. His mill was soon successful and he built another mill nearby in 1873 which became known as the Fenton Mill after him. The Panic of 1893 led to a decrease in demand for flour and Fenton mills closed down completely. However, his son-in-law John Naylor kept running one of Naylor's mills until it went out of business in 1905). Fenton also built a sawmill around this time which continued to be active until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. In 1916, Harry Heineman opened up Heineman's Department Store on Main Street in Farmington which became an important part of town life. Heineman also started up the first radio station in Minnesota (KDKA) here in Farmington back then too!

Mrs. Haggerty came from a farming background and learned how to raise crops using traditional methods while living near her childhood home on Big Creek Lake outside of Minneapolis. She later moved to farm land next to what is now known as Farmers Market Place where she developed new methods for raising crops that would eventually lead to modern agriculture techniques being used throughout much of Minnesota today! Another important figure involved in early industrial development in Farmington was Julius Calkins Sr., who served as president ofthe Minneapolis Gaslight Company from 1896 until his death five years later due to illness! After Mr. Calkins’s death, his son Julius Jr., took over his father’s company and went on to become one ofMinnesota’s most successful businessmen! In addition, many other notable individuals have contributed significantly to the growth and successofFarmington over the years including Mrs. Anna Ladd (1912-2003), Fred Wall (1920-2002), Donny Ziegler (1963-present), Dick DeVos (1948-)and numerous others! Farmington was founded in 1828 by Isaac Stevens and his wife, Philomena. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to transportation. In 1857, Farmington became a town charter and was renamed after Major General George Armstrong Custer. The city of Farmington merged with Minneapolis in 1959.
