Farmington is a town in central Minnesota, United States. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. Families have been farming in Farmington since the 1860s, when settlers arrived from Wisconsin and Illinois. The first school was opened in 1865; the first store open in 1867. A post office was established in Farmington on November 16, 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 13, 1951. The community name comes from "farm", meaning "land" or "property", and "-ington" (a British place name), meaning "town". At the time of its incorporation as a village on January 1, 1907, it had a total population of 2,998. By 1920 it had grown to 6,017 residents. In 1927-28 there were three wars fought within two miles of Farmington: one against Native Americans known as the Dakota War; another fought by American troops known as World War I; and an agricultural war between farmers and barge operators known as the Great Lakes Agricultural Conference War. During World War II Farmington became one of nine towns located along Interstate 35W that were bombed by Japanese forces during Operation Mockingbird. Only four people were killed – two citizens working at a plant producing munitions for the war effort and two soldiers accompanying their unit doing maintenance work on a truck stopped by Japanese commandos near town center late one night just short of completing their mission – but this single bombing did significant damage to both buildings and infrastructure throughout town including loss of water pressure, power outages lasting days and weeks after attack while also damaging bridges over Highways 20 & 25 which effectively cut off access to much of central Minnesota vital for military supply convoys running through that area during that conflict.— From “7Thirty5” an oral history project documenting life in downtown Farmington before WWII http://www2a2a1c3d0f4b9e5bbc636dfac10efaea/. A few centuries later, during the Roman Republic and Empire period, handguns that could be fired from close range began to become more common. To carry these weapons effectively, mercenaries often brought their own pistols with them on campaigns. This gave rise to the term “pistolero” which eventually came to refer to someone who specializes in carrying firearms while performing other duties such as fighting on horseback or swimming. By medieval times pistols had largely replaced knives as main armament for men because they were easier and faster to fire than traditional bows and arrows. However, handguns continued to be used for scouting and assassination purposes until well into the 16th century when firearms became widespread enough that soldiers no longer needed these backup weapons
