Farmington is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,707 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The name "Farmington" comes from the Dakota name Farm Creek and thence, likely, to its location on a bend in the creek where Indian Trails passed through it. On July 20, 1851, US Army Captain James Waugh wasachee organized a force of 10 men under US Major John Bainbridge to attack the Sioux village of Sibley on an island in Farm Creek near the present-day border between Ramsey and Hennepin counties. After spending three days with only their rifles and cannon for support, they succeeded in driving off these Indians and taking all their goods. In 1865 Jesse Loring donated land to build what is now downtown Farmington; this donation has been cited as one of the earliest examples of civic engagement in Farmington history.

The name "Farmington" comes from a Sioux word meaning "place of many streams." The Town of Farmington was organized on November 15, 1858, and named for farmer James A. Farmington. The first settler in what is now Farmington was Abram J. Gillett who arrived in 1856 from Illinois and established a farm west of present-day downtown Farmington on what are now State Highway 36 and Old US-61A (now Blooming Prairie Road). Gillett's land became the nucleus around which later settlers built their homes and businesses within the boundaries that remain today including: White Bear Lake Township, North Dakota Township, South Dakota Township (including current day Brainerd), Ramsey County (including present day Forest Lake), and Johnson County. In 1872 Alexander Gamble settled on his farm north of present-day downtown Farmington along what are now State Highway 36 and Old US-61A (now Blooming Prairie Road). Gamble became one of the early entrepreneurs in this region by starting a flour mill as well as wagon shops/ stores throughout centralMinnesota during the late 19th century characterized by wide trade with eastern Canada primarily through Buffalo Bayou crossings at Milaca Ferry Landing south of Minneapolis During World War II residents mobilized to create an engine plant to produce munitions for the war effort located just outside city limits on what are now SEPTA Rail tracks directly across from Hennepin County Government Complex near where Interstate 35 crosses into Hennepin County; however no evidence exists that such an engine plant ever actually operated or produced munitions anywhere near City Limits or inside University Park campus bounds today!

The name "Farmington" is derived from the French word for "farm" and "town". The first settlers in Farmington were farmers who came from France in 1858. They erected a log cabin on what is now Fourth Street and named it "Farmington." In 1862, the first school was organized in Farmington and classes began with thirty students. A new post office was established at Farmington in 1865 and served community until 1888 when it became Hibbing County's second post office. At that time, it included all of Hibbing County excepting downtown Minneapolis. The early residents of Farmington were instrumental in developing the town into its present form. Many of them were Methodists who arrived here around 1840 to start farms near the river mouth on Lake Superior. By 1860, they had developed a strong church culture which continues to this day: many members of early farming families remain active today as pastors or lay leaders in their congregations. In 1870, Presbyterian missionaries arrived from Scotland to preach Christianity to indigenous people living along Lake Superior's shoreline; they called this area Dempster Landing because one of their elders had landed there on his ship during a missionary journey some years earlier. After two years preaching throughout what is now Hibbing and Ramsey counties (all but north centralMinnesota), they decided to move their headquarters back upriver to what is now Minneapolis so that they could better impact social changes within their destination country - an important step forward for missionary work at that time! In 1872 tired of waiting for government officials to take action on various social problems affecting natives living along Lake Superior's shoreslines, these missionaries founded the First Baptist Church here - one among many churches planted by Scotsmen during this era across North America! By 1880, most importantly - after more than 150 years as an actively engaged congregation - First Baptist Church had become home to an adult education department which helped immigrants learn English so that they could gain entry into American society and participate fully in local economic life!
