In recent decades, Farmington has seen consistent growth as an agricultural center with major production coming from corn, soybeans, wheat, dairy products, pork products, applesauce/fruit juice concentrate/, potatoes/cranberry sauce/, cornmeal (),and eggs (). On March 2nd 1851, Wohlgemuth purchased 640 acres (248 ha) from Peter Biddle for $3 per acre ($27 per sq km). His purchase included a millstream called Clearwater Creek which later became known as Farmington's watercourse because it ran through town. On April Fool's Day 1852, whenMinnesota was admitted into the Union as a United States Territory,[1]Wohlgemuth donated all of his land east of State Road 55 to create what is now known as Hennepin County.[2] He served as one of the first county commissioners.[3] In 1865 he married Anna Jensdatter Hesseltine and they founded what would be their only child Anna Jensdotter Wohlgemuth-Hesseltine: she would become active in civic affairs throughout her life. They lived until 1901 when they passed away at age ninety-eight years old.[4][5] In 1860 Farmer John Sorensen settled on property east of present day Second Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues northwest of downtown[6]. Sorensen was one of six early settlers who built a log cabin near what is today First Avenue South between Tenth and Eleventh Streets – this site became known as Sorensen Heights[7]. It should be noted that there are several sources that claim there were six early settlers: three men reported by name only – John Sorensen (1860), David Anderson (1861) and Rasmus Rasmussen (1862)[8], three women – Ann Jensdatter Hesseltine (1850), Maren Jensen (born c. 1857)[9], four children born to Anna Sr.: John Hanson Sorensen(baptized February 14th 1861), Margaret Jane Hanson Sorenson(baptized December 12th 1863), Deborah Lillian Hanson Sorenson(born May 10th 1865)[10], Nicholas Hanson Wohlgemuth(baptized November 25th 1868).[11],[12],[13],[14],[15]), however these claims are without any supporting evidence or verification beyond mere assertions made without more information or citations given
