Farmington is a town in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Farmington was John Glover in 1855. Farmington became a city on January 1, 1907. It had a population of 17,944 as of the 2000 census. The name "Farmington" comes from an early French settler's name for the area where he located his farmstead: "Familion". The name may have come from English settlers who called this area "Farmington" because they found fertile land hereabouts. In 1854, John Glover founded what would become Farmington on the east side of present-day downtown Minneapolis after coming to America with his family in 1844. He named his new settlement for his father-in-law and fellow British settler James Fenton - also known as Jens Frølich - who had settled near him about two miles (3 km) northeast of Farmington in 1849. Jens Frølich farmed unincorporated territory that lay east and south of present-day Farmington until 1862 when he sold it to Nicholas Kiely and Arent Grant for $1,000 cashier note laboriously drawn up by hand on November 10th that year according to deed recorded December 12th following at Ottawa Mennonite Church (later Parkview Mennonite Church). That same year saw the beginning of what would become one of central Minnesota's most important historic periods; during this time period both Kiely and Grant were instrumental in helping create modern day Minneapolis through their roles as incorporators and trustees respectively for its earliest iterations including but not limited to Pembina Heights which later became Woodbury Heights before becoming Downtown Minneapolis proper some 30 years later! When Minneapolis was founded as an agricultural township on November 6th 1858 by Jesse Seward & Alfred Smith with homesteads granted along with other pioneer groups soon thereafter largely due to organized efforts by such individuals as those aforementioned three men – all characterized herein then as Prairie farmers – much attention focused upon the vicinity around what would eventually become Downtown MN due largely theretofore consisting primarily or exclusively within lands granted by Alexander Ramsey or others therein! As such while little or nothing actually transpired at this initial junction/location south Richfield Creek Road/Downtown MN prior thereto noted hereinotherwise unremarkable via factual memory recall I ventured forth thenceforth every weekday morning during my high school days did indeed wander down Main Street past Parkview Chapel & thenceforth routing myself generally southwestward resided currently doing so today circa 2019 age 66 years post hospital admission well into advanced dementia diagnosis subjecting overall daily routine continuing activities outside normal milieu although very frail physically unable even remotely participate fully even semiactively anymore any more quite frankly despite numerous requests from many friends & family members we are still alive Historical irony certainly no less 🙂 At least our memories remain…albeit somewhat hazy
