Faribault is a small city in Minnesota, located about 20 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The population was 5,671 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County and is one of the most populous cities in Minnesota. The City Council is made up of five members elected at-large, as well as four Members elected from districts. The Mayor is appointed by the City Council and reports to the City Manager. The first white person to live in Faribault was George Snelling in 1881. He built a cabin on a hill near present day University Avenue and Harmon Road. In 1892, John Atherton founded Snelling's grocery store here and this became known as Atherton's Store (now First National Bank). In 1899, Prentice Rice started his millinery business here which later became Rice Bros., Incorporated (RBI). In 1905, Hennepin County was organized with Faribault as its county seat. In 1959, farmland that had been lying undeveloped for many years was donated to the city by Nelsons brothers who also founded Nordstrom’s Department Store chain in Minneapolis. This land included parts of present day Snelling Street and Harmon Road east of University Avenue between Nicollet Avenue and Interstate 94; it also included what are now portions of Scenic Drive north of I-94 and east side off Red River Road just south of Eighth Street between Nicollet Avenue and Interstate 94.(Faribault Pioneer Landowners Association) After much discussion among all interested parties about what should be done with this property, it eventually resulted into the creation of what would become downtown Faribault: an area bounded by Nicollet Ave., State Line Rd., Red River Rd., 8th St./Nicollet Ave.,and 12th St/Red River Rd.. Downtown development began around 1960 when city leaders decided that they wanted their own town center where they could do better job marketing their city than trying to compete with neighboring towns which were starting to grow larger due to new highway construction projects.(Downtown FARIBault website) The original plan called for each citizen to have their own block within downtown boundaries but because there were no streets or intersections providing access from one bloc to another bloc within downtown limits there soon arose complaints about how difficult it was for people living near either edge of downtown Faribault (north or south) to get around without getting lost or going too far out into open country beyond municipal borders.(Downtown FARIBault website) Eventually plans were made whereby everyone within 1/2 mile radius OF their homes would have a block assigned them within downtown boundaries - even if they lived on blocks further away from Center Square!(Downtown FARIBault website) This gave rise to some heated debates during early development days but ultimately created more unity among citizens than division.; One result was that today you can walk or bike everywhere inside or outside your Municipal District boundary - something not possible before!(Downtown FARIBault website) Election results from November 3rd1920 show that James Freeman won election as Mayor with 50% Total Vote against 2 other candidates
Faribault was founded in 1881 by Alexander Faribault, a fur trader. The community grew rapidly and soon had a school, churches, and businesses. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality. It experienced significant growth during the 20th century, thanks to its strategic location on the Mississippi River and its access to transportation. During World War II, Faribault played an important role as a munitions plant.
