The history of guns in Faribault, Minnesota started with the development of cannons in the late 18th century. One of the first cannons to be used in Faribault was a small gun called an arbalest. The arbalest was a type of firearm that consisted of an arm and stock made from hardwood or other woods. The weapon was fired by means of a bow and arrow. In 1878, a company known as Gopher Firearms bought some old cannon barrels from the local military for use as shotguns. In 1904, Gopher Firearms changed its name to Minneapolis Arms Company and began manufacturing handguns and revolvers under this new name. In 1915, Minneapolis Arms Company merged with another firearms company, Smith & Wesson, to form what is now American Shooting Sports Corporation (ASSC). This merger led to the production of rifles and shotguns under two different brand names: Smith & Wesson Model 39 (1915), Minneapolis Arms Company Model 91 (1916). In 1938, ASSC produced its first automatic pistol which became known as the M-1 carbine. This pistol featured an 8-round magazine and could fire at normal rates up to 125 rounds per minute. It was also one of the most popular pistols produced by ASSC during World War II because it extremely reliable and easy to use.
Faribault is a small town in the Minnesota Department of Communities and Economic Development, located in east-central Minnesota. The population was 6,281 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Rochester–Merritt Borough school district. The first permanent settler in what is now Faribault was Jens Hansen on July 10, 1854. He and his family were among the first to come to what is now Faribault from Norway. In 1855, John Smedley came as a passenger on the "Dakota" with over 100 people aboard. Smedley's group erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after himself, Smedley's Store and Trading Post. In 1857, David Thomson built a house near present day Canadian Lake on land that he had purchased fromDavid Allman for $10 cash only. Thomson later became postmaster here. A gristmill was built about this time by Solomon Eaton across Canada Creek from Thomson's property which started operations in October 1861; it continued operation until 1893 when it was replaced by an elevator/grinding mill complex that still stands today known as Eaton Mill Road (now US Highway 169). Faribault, Minnesota is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 1,953 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is the county seat of Ramsey County. The name "Faribault" comes from French meaning "to wander." Early pioneers in this area were French Canadians who came to North America in 1832 as part of the Great Lakes Settlement project and began ranchering around what is now Faribault Lake. In 1866, Dakota Territory was created from parts of Minnesota and Dakota County was organized; it included much of what is now Faribault County. The town's first store opened in 1870 on Main Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues (now State Highway 151). The townsite that grew up around Faribault went through several changes during its history: it was originally named Grosse Pointe (meaning "big point") before being changed to Ferryland after an act by then-Governor James Kiefer Ferry in 1907; it became Hibbing before being renamed again, this time to Faribault after an act by then-Senator John Dickey Faribault in 1912; finally, it reverted back to Ferryland following an act by then-Governor Emmett Wright in 1916. In 1915, when Smithfield Foods moved its headquarters from Stonington, Connecticut to Corvallis, Oregon after acquiring a controlling share in Thatchers grocery chain there, they chose not to move their plant into what would become Ramsey County but instead built a new one on land east of present day Interstate 94 near Hastings Avenue and Justia Road which they called Farmington Hills until their sale to Archer Daniels Midland Corporation in 1984.
