The area around what is now Faribault was first settled by the Menominee and other Sioux tribes in 1794. A post office called Faribault was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town of Faribault was platted on February 11, 1882, by General John Nicolay and Major James Archer as part of a larger act to promote growth along the Mississippi River corridor. The townsite had been proposed by Captain George Armstrong Custer who had traveled through this area on his way to Ottawa from Buffalo Bayou during the American Civil War era. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. In 1865, Captain George Armstrong established a store and Post office here which served as a center for trade with Indians and other parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. In 1871, one of the first schools in Ramsey County was opened in Faribault by Mrs. Aiken (Hilda) Smith; it was operated under private auspices until1896 when it became part of the public school district system under county charter number 536-A. In 1912, Milton Mowat donated land to build an industrial park that included a new paper mill and refinery; this area now includes most of downtown Faribault. In 1927, construction began on what would become known as "the Big Mill", one of only two mills remaining from America's original turnip crop plantations near where Faribault now stands; it continued operating until 1984 when it closed due to lack of demand for its output after more efficient technology replaced it。
