Fairmont is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 7,424 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County and part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Fairmont was John Nelson in 1855. He named his farm "New Beginnings" after his new home in Canada. rice grew rapidly on the land and by 1860, nineteen farmers had planted rice on what is now fairmount avenue. In 1865, James Dorman settled along the exact same spot and named his farm "Dorman's Prairie". The name Fairmount came about because early Methodists from Illinois donated land to build a Methodist church there in 1868. A post office called Fairmont was established in 1872, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. A cotton gin started operations here in 1886; it became one of the largest cotton gins west of the Mississippi River. By 1907, ninety-four businesses had opened here; seventy-six were stores and twenty-eight were factories including two breweries (the First National Brewery and Pabst Brewing). In 1909, Fairmont incorporated as a town with a population of 586 people; it lost its status as a village when incorporation resulted in more businesses opening within Fairmount itself instead of outside it. In 1925, when Minnesotans voting on whether to allow cities to annex adjacent rural towns failed to approve an annexation plan for neighboring Brooklyn Heights due to objections from several residents within that city over high traffic levels caused by heavy industry taking up space inside their neighborhoods - including banks -Fairmont annexedBrooklyn Heights without any opposition from that community or anyone else within its borders until annexation occurred again almost 50 years later even though Brooklyn Heights has since regained much of its own government and infrastructure while still being considered an annexed town by Fairmont residents
