When Fairmont, Minnesota was founded in 1851, the town had two churches and no schools. The first school opened in 1857 and it was a one-room building on the corner of Main and Second Streets. In 1916, a new school opened on Third Street which became the primary school for Fairmont until 1975. In 1957, an armory was built in Fairmont and it served as the town's main armory until 1990. In that year, the town passed a resolution to discontinue using armories as schools since they were not used for educational purposes anymore. From 1990 through 2000, the onlyarmoryleftinFairmontwastheOldArmoryonThirdStreetwhichwasbecomeanrecreationalarenafor localsandvisitors alike. In 2003, the Old Armory was replaced by a new armORY on Fourth Street which is now called "The Armory". It has served as Fairmont's only armORY ever since! There are currently three other armories located in or around Fairmont- one at East High School (opened in 2001), one at South High School (opened in 2002) and one at West High School (opened in 2004). These are all used for different purposes such as storage, training exercises and more!

By the 1990s only about 100 people lived in Fairmont Village while most of the rest of the community resided in surrounding rural areas. In February 2009, it was announced that Fairmount Township would be merging with Todd County effective January 1st, 2010; this merger will result in an increased population for both entities becauseTodd County now has an entire city within its borders (Hastings). This change will have a significant impact on many aspects of life for residents including school districts and municipal services which are currently located outside of town limits; however some positive impacts may also exist such as easier access to medical care and county parks.

In 1916, the Fairmont became home to world's largest ice cream sundae when it introduced a double scoop of vanilla ice cream with whipped cream that weighed over two pounds. It is said that no other establishment could match this Ice Cream Sundae until it closed its doors in 1979. In 1984, the restaurant reopened as Momofuku Noodle Bar which has been open continuously since then.
