Fairmont is a small town in the State of Minnesota, located about 20 miles east of Minneapolis. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census. Fairmont is considered one of the older towns in the Twin Cities area, dating back to 1892 when it was part of Mankato Township. It became a separate municipality in 1907 and has since grown considerably. The first settler in what is now Fairmont was John Goodspeed who arrived in 1851 and homesteaded near where he found land today's fairmount Cemetery. After a few years, Goodspeed sold his property to Isaac Halsey who built a home on it around 1853-54. Halsey's son, Jacob Halsey, also founded Fairmont after purchasing land from Andrew Johnson for $1 per acre (in present day Cottage Grove). In 1870, John Charles Fenton purchased 204 acres northwest of town from Halsey for $50 per acre (current day Southowne). This large tract included what is now downtown Fairmont as well as much of present day southtowne including the old post office building which still stands today! In 1907, when Mankato Township merged with Ramsey County to form counties within Minnesota, Fairmont became a part of Ramsey County. At that time it had a population of just over 1,000 people and consisted mostly of farmers and their families living along with several small businesses. Over time however its size grew significantly as more and more people started moving into the area seeking opportunities for growth and progress both personal and professional.
