Fairmont is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the east bank of the Minnesota River. The population was 486 at the 2010 census. In 1870, Andrew Carnegie donated cash towards construction of a new schoolhouse at current day Second Street and Lyndale Avenue; construction began that year and finished two years later. Between 1895 and 1907, Drury College also moved to its current location on Webster Avenue just west of Third Street in Fairmont Township (). As early as 1896, residents were using local charcoal to fuel their homes rather than imports from across Canada or countries farther away (). Coal mining started operations here in 1901 (), but it was not until 1906 when coalmining finally ended with the opening of a new mine about four miles north on Brady Road () that Fairmont experienced significant economic development(). That same year saw also installation of electric lights throughout town while telephones began service only three months prior (). From 1915 until 1959 there was daily airmail service between Minneapolis–Saint Paul (MSP) and Fargo via Duluth (), but this service eventually ended due to budget cuts due to World War II (); fairmont residents however continued to receive mail via First Air Express until 1955 when MSP discontinued all airmail services within its boundaries effective July 1st that year .

In 1916, due to World War I efforts by Minnesota Governor James Buchanan Hennepin (D), Fairmont joined with neighboring towns along the Red River Valley into what would become known as Hennepin County. This move helped solidify Faironton's status as one of the most important communities in southern Minnesota; it still enjoys strong community ties today!
