In 1927, Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Mitchell donated land for what would become the first indoor ski slope in North America when they opened Black Diamond Ski Area on Summit Avenue adjacent to their home at 7405 Maplewood Drive south of downtown Minneapolis; it remains one of only two commercial skispeedways in the United States today (the other being Aspen Mountain). On February 4, 1928, President Calvin Coolidge inaugurated America’s first indoor ski slope with an event attended by dignitaries from around the country at Black Diamond Ski Area; this signalized the beginning of a new era for ice skating that continues to this day In 1929–30, Mr. & Mrs. Mitch installed a large hangar/ballroom on top of their home which served as headquarters for all our operations during these years while also accommodating up to 1,000 guests/day for banquets or formal events such as weddings or funerals etc… This facility still stands today and can accommodate up to 150 people for Banquet Room functions or 100 guests/day for Meeting Rooms or Ballrooms! Today we offer Banquet Facilities located upstairs overlooking Third Street inside our current Lobby area! In 1937–38InterContinental Hotels Corporation began development on State Street just north of downtown Minneapolis opposite Uptown Theater which would become their flagship property – known locally simply as “The Star” – eventually serving as over 100 properties throughout North America with over 6 million guests having visited InterContinental Hotels Corporation venues by 1984 On October 15th 1957 – 55 years ago today – InterContinental Hoteltechnicians successfully completed installation of world’s largest air conditioning system providing unprecedented comfort during Minnesota wintertime After years passed where no major renovations were made to either building[…]Due largely to changing economic conditions[…]both buildings closed Egyptian style in 1984 after almost 60 year hiatus from any significant renovation although much interior detail still remained similar including elaborate walls covered entirely with beautiful textured cloth damask fabric sourced from Egypt
In 1869, the first hotel in Fairmont was built. It was a small two-story building with ten rooms and was used by the townspeople. In 1903, the first restaurant in Fairmont opened. It was called the Hotel Centerville and served dinner nightly. In 1916, the first convenience store in Fairmont opened. It was called The Kress adjoined The Grange and sold goods such as groceries, eggs, milk, breads, cigarettes and postcards. In 1951, the first high school in Fairmont opened. It was called Park High School and served students from grades nine through twelve. From 1961 to 1966, Fairmont had its own TV station which aired programming from Minnesota State University Twin Cities (MSU). In 1969,fairmountain lodge became a full-time tourist attraction with a half-hour documentary about it shown on TV every evening for three years before being cancelled due to budget cuts
