In the early twentieth century, Fairmont was a small town in Minnesota. The people of Fairmont were proud of their optical industry, and many of them had their own businesses. One of these businesses was the Optical Laboratory, which was founded by Dr. J.H. MacLeod in 1916. The Optical Laboratory was a research and development center for new optical products and technologies. In addition to developing new technology, the Optical Laboratory also served as a training ground for future engineers and scientists. One of the most famous optical products developed at the Optical Laboratory was the television set. The Television Set Company (TSC) purchased rights to use Dr. MacLeod's patented design for a television set in 1922. However, it wasn't until 1923 that TSC actually produced an effective television set! The work done at the Optical Laboratory helped make Fairmont one of the leading locales for optics research and development during this time period. Many technological advancements were made here, such as better lenses and hardened glassware that would withstand shock waves from exploding fireworks displays during prohibition nights in 1920s America!

In 1911, Edwin Land patented an eyeglasses design that allowed users to see clearly even when there is no light at all (seeFigure 3). This invention helped make eyeglasses more popular across cultures because it made it possible for people of all ages to enjoy good vision without having to rely on bright lights or sunglasses every time they want to see clearly
