Fairmont is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Fairmont is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. It was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1881 and became a township in 1903. In 1968, it merged with neighboring Maplewood to form Fairmont-Maplewood Township. The name for the combined municipality until 2008 was Maplewood-Fairmont Township. The first settlers of what would become Fairmount were Norwegian farmers who emigrated from Trondheim, Norway in 1881. The original farmsteads were located near present-day Maplewood and Fairmount Roads on the south side of Ramsey County. By 1902, they had erected a log cabin on their farmstead which they named "Familie Vilt." They raised chickens and pigs there until 1917 when they started to grow crops and sell eggs. In 1918, they built a two story frame house on their property which served as their residence for more than fifty years until sold in 2006 to John Hildebrandt of Eden Prairie who used it as his home office until his death in 2009 In 1968, following the merger of two other townships – Maplewood-Fairmount Township (then known as Maplewood) and Mount Olive Township (then called Garden City) – Fairmont-Maplewoods split into two municipalities: Fairmont proper and Maplewood-Fairmount Township North; while still part of Ramsey County government, these municipalities operated as separate entities with their own services and taxes within the county budget The population of both municipalities grew slowly through the early 2000s before reaching 2,564 by2010 due largely to job growth associated with new construction projects announced by various local governments throughout Minnesota during that decade including Ramsey County This recent trend continued through 2016 when both municipalities reached 3,065 residents according to latest census figures . At this point jobs have not been generated rapidly enough or consistently enough so that either municipality can reach its full potential growth potential which could result in annexation or amalgamation into larger cities such as Minneapolis/St Paul should this trend continue

The first post office was established in 1882, and the first store opened in 1887. Agriculture remains the primary economic activity of the community today with over eighty percent of residents employed within county government or other publicly funded institutions such as health care or education services. The fairgrounds located off US Highway 52 offer events for local residents and visitors alike each year during early summertime when temperatures reach 50 degrees F (10 degrees C). The Fairmont Hotel was built in 1881 as a two story adobe building on the corner of State and Nicollet. It soon became known as one of the most luxurious hotels in the city. The Fairmont was home to some of Minnesota's top politicians, businessmen, and celebrities. In 1915, it was bought by the Minneapolis Consolidated Insurance Company. The company used it as a training school for insurance salesmen before selling it to the Fairmont Hotel chain in 1922.
