Fairmont is a small town in southcentral Minnesota, about 20 miles southwest of the city of Minneapolis. The first settlers were Norwegian farmers who arrived in 1857. They named the community "Fremont" after their hero, General John Frémont. The name was changed to Fairmont in 1907 and it has been used since then as the official name of the town. The Fairmont School District encompasses all of Fairmont, as well as parts of Hastings and Wrightstown. The school district was founded in 1912, when an agreement was made between six local schools and the Minneapolis-St. Paul School District. In 1916, a new high school was built and named for Dr. George Wirths, who had served as superintendent of schools at Minneapolis-St. Paul from 1909 to 1915. In 1930, another large school building was erected on Summit Drive near Maple Grove Road (now owned by Hennepin County) which became known as "Fairmount". That same year, a football stadium also became available for use by the townspeople andwas renamed "Municipal Stadium". It was later renamed "Drummond Field" after Dr. Drummond Macdonald, who donated land for the facility. In 1951–1952 two more large buildings were added to Fairmount - one called "Hughson Hall" after Colman Hughson (founder and first president of MasterCard) and another called "Boyd Auditorium", which served as both a gymnasium/auditorium/ canteen/conference hall with a seating capacity of 880 people and also housed an American Legion Post No 2 during World War II . From 1955 to 1957 two more small buildings were added to Fairmount - one called "Hornbeck Hall" after Mrs. John Hornbeck (founder of First National Bank) while another called "Garland Heights" after Mr., Garland Hildebrandt (president pro tem & treasurer generalof Stroudsburg Mutual Life Insurance Company). The first settlers in what is now Fairmont, Minnesota were French Canadians who arrived in 1832. The town was founded by Captain François-Pierre L’Édouard Fairmont, a fur trader and explorer who also served as the first Mayor of Fairmont. In 1854, the town became a city when it was annexed by Minneapolis.
