The history of gun safes in Fairmont, Minnesota began with the early settlers. One of the earliest settlers in the area was John and Anna Welch, who arrived in 1851. They brought with them a gun safe, which is still standing today at their home on Nicollet Avenue. The safe was probably built before 1850, as it wasn’t mentioned until that year in a census report. It was likely used by the Welch family for storage purposes since they had no children to take care of their guns. In 1855, J.P.O’Neill and his wife came to Fairmont from Illinois and purchased land near present-day Nicollet Avenue and Seventh Street. O’Neill opened a store on this property and sold firearms to local residents. He also built a house on Nicollet Ave., which served as his store and home office. In 1858, he married Eliza Haskins who had also come from Illinois. The couple moved into their new home and started trading goods between Illinois and Minnesota for goods brought over by travelers arriving on the Great Northern Railway (GNR). Around 1860-1861, several other families followed suit within months of O’Neill & Haskins! These families were responsible for building many of the homes in Fairmont today including Mrs.] Rector House (now part of St Cloud State University), Drury House (now part of technical college), Mr.] Byars House (now part of Melvin Homes), Mr.] Laddie Home (now part of First United Methodist Church) – all located around Eighth Street/Nicollet Ave., south side now known as West Side Drive/Hennepin Boulevard – Argyle Place/Municipal Road No 4 etc.). In 1967, the National Firearms Association (NFA) merged with Handgun Control America (HCA) to form the National Rifle Association (NRA). In 1978, handgun manufacturers started producing their own safes under their own brands names such as Colt’s American Armory, Smith & Wesson Safes, Ruger Safes and Remington Safes. In 1984, Glock Manufacturing Corporation was founded by David Bowers with a goal to create “the best handgun safe on the market”. Fairmont is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ramsey County. The city is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is located about 60 miles (100 km) east of downtown Minneapolis. The word " Fairmont" comes from English meaning "pleasant ground." The original settlers were farmers who came to what is now Fairmont in 1851 and named their community after Prince George's County, Maryland, home of President James K. Polk and his family. After a few years, they moved to what is now Ramsey County and began land farming which remains their primary source of income today. In 1915, when Stroudsburg Steel Corporation built a new plant on the west side of town, nearby residents applied for incorporation as a city but were turned down because it would have put them in competition with Stroudsburg for jobs and tax revenue. In 1920, local businessmen Edgar Ladd and John Daugherty organized what became known as the Fairmount Bridge Company to build a tollbridge over Big Creek between Fairmount and Ramsey Counties that would serve both communities as well as provide transportation access between them. Toll rates started at 5¢ per vehicle per day until 1927 when they increased to 10¢ per vehicle per day effective May 1st of that year until bridge construction was completed on November 30th by members of both towns under an agreement reached by representatives from each group.... Ferry service across Big Creek continued until 1957 when it was discontinued due to budget cuts by state highway officials... Today only memory lane exists over Big Creek where vehicles could cross at any time during the day or night without having to pay... A plaque marks this spot commemorating how ferry service once functioned: "Herein lies one great story in favor of democracy - shipping traffic crossed Big Creek without payment for 50 years!"

fairmont is a town in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,893 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants as Fairmount Township, Fairmont changed its name to Anoka in 1876. The town officially became a city on January 1, 1989. The first settler in what is nowFairmont was Swede Jonas Norstad who arrived on July 4, 1844. He and his family built a log cabin near the present day intersection of US Highway 10 and State Street. In 1850, Norway's first schoolmaster named Einar Haugen came to the area and started teaching students from nearby farms how to read and write. In 1862, Norwegian immigrant Anders Olsen set up shop along US Highway 10 west of current-day Fairmont for selling goods brought overland from Canada by wagonloads. This early business activity helped support the growth of Fairmount Township and the subsequent creation of Anoka County. In 1876, an act passed by the state Legislature designated December 31 as "Anka Day" in commemoration of this event. On that date – coinciding with America's centennial year – Anoka City was founded as a result of an amalgamation process led by then- Mayor William Akeley and other local officials with input from residents living within Fairmount Township boundaries only. As part of this process, many businesses within Fairmount Township were moved or closed as part of the consolidation effort; however, some original structures still remain including Norstad’s Cabin (now occupied by Village Hall), Haugen’s Store (later renamed Pohl’s Hardware), Anderson’s Livery stable (later known as Ritchie Bros., Inc.), Old Hudson Schoolhouse (later known as First Baptist Church) and assorted other buildings located around today’s downtown core area which include: Riverside Park; northwest corner of Seventh Avenue N & State Street NW; east side of Seventh Avenue N & Broadway SW; northeast corner of Ninth Avenue N & Broadway SW; southeast cornerof Tenth Avenue N & Lexington Ave NW.; north sideof Tenth avenue N & Lexington Ave NW.; south sideof Ninth avenue N & Broadway SW.; southwest cornerof Eighth avenues NE&SW., and northwest cornerof Eighth avenues NE&NW.. During this time frame also new construction such as Methodist Episcopal church building erected on land donated by Mrs John Hohman which later became home to St Cloud University campus prior to its relocation to Minneapolis in 1929). Additionally various grocery stores were established including: Gillett Bros., Poindexter General Store… latterly becoming Wetherbee's Grocery Co./Wetherbee's Supermarket Company after World War II before being bought out by Monsanto Foods Corporation in 1984). All these businesses laid down foundations during what is commonly referred to today as “the Golden Age Of shopping centers/townships/cities." One noteworthy development that took place during this time frame was Pioneer Woman Musicians Association formed in 1916 when five women began playing together at a piano at their mothers home while they waited for their turn at lessons from Mrs George Hohman which eventually grew into one of Minnesota's most successful music organizationsToday Pioneer Woman Music Association continues operations providing classes/instructions for female artists aged 16+, singing traditional country music under licence from Roy Acuff
