Fairmont is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The city is named after GeorgeFairmount, an early settler and rancher. The first post office in Fairmont was established on December 1, 1873. It was renamed Garden City on February 14, 1907. On July 24, 1912, the name of the city was changed to Fairmont by act of the Minnesota Legislature following a referendum vote conducted by mail ballot. The Fairmont area has been settled for centuries by Native Americans and European immigrants alike. Today’s Fairmont community began as a small settlement near milepost 12 on the old Minneapolis-St. Paul Railway route from Cedar Rapids to Minneapolis-Hastings (now Duluth). A gristmill stood where Fruitland Shopping Center now stands until 1886 when it burned down; however, evidence suggests that early settlers built a sawmill northwest of town on what is now Park Boulevard in 1879 or 1880. That mill became known as Maple Mill and still remains standing today with its original building still intact within walking distance of downtownFairmont today! In 1892 local entrepreneur Marcus Daly founded what would become one of Minnesota’s largest paper companies – Dakota Territory Paper Company – located just east of town along Park Boulevard between Third Street and Fourth Street North (now University Avenue). After years of growth and expansion that included several new buildings across from present day Elmira Mall (!), Dakota Territory Paper Company merged with Northwestern Paper Company in 1924 to form Twin Cities Paper Company which continued to grow rapidly into the 1970s becoming one of America’s leading commercial papermakers before collapsing due to economic competition during the late 1970s recession… fairmount had all but disappeared until 1985 when he resurrected it again as MN Western Paper Co(a division) under current ownership…the company has since grown even more successful once again reaching $1 billion in annual sales!!! this story does not stop there however as over time our company has made contributions to many different charities organizations throughout missouri including being proud members of both cedar Rapids social services group “serve your community” (www3/charity/fairmount/)and also providing support for autism research at racine university….our success stories are only beginning

Fairmont is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the shore of Lake Superior. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area and is home to the University of Saint Thomas in St Paul. In 1851, Daniel Fairmont founded what would become Fairmont, Minnesota. He started out as a farmstead on the edge of what is now downtown Fairmont. In 1857, he sold his farm to John Auld and migration began from northeast Manitoba into Minnesota Territory which included present-day southeastern Minnesota and all that lay east of Interstate 94. The first settlers arrived on July 15,1857 when Capten Reuben Warzey set out from Illinois with 11 men including himself for what would be called Dakota County today but was then part of Hennepin County because it had been ceded to Minneapolis by treaty in 1856 following the Mexican-American War (1846-48). At first they were farmers living off their land but soon realized more could be done with this "new country." They pooled their money together to buy an additional piece of property which they named after him – DanielFairmount Farm – contiguous with their original farmstead just north of where it still stands today on West Side Boulevard near Hastings Avenue/Lake Street (now Harding Drive). Today's Daniel fairmount Parkway runs along its perimeter carrying this name as do some parts of downtown Fairmont while others such as blocks long ago removed from downtown have retained much or all theiroriginal architecture including some very old school buildings! The early days were difficult; not only did they have to fight off Native American attacks but also pioneer times were tough and there wasn't much money available for anything other than farming so progress was slow until people got wise about railroads coming through so trade opened up and prices went down making goods affordable for everyone. By 1870 things had change however as wheat became easier to getholds due to railroad attachments leading people away from cattle operations replaced by mills that produced flour, paper products etc., reducing demand for animal husbandry product like milk which led many farmers out into towns variously forming around them such as Plymouth Heights (founded 1865), White Bear Township (founded 1870), Minnetonka (founded 1872) etcetera giving rise eventuallyto towns like Maplewood (established 1886), Shakopee(established 1889) etcetera essential for transportation linkages within communities during those early years when cars didn't exist! Daniel's son George WmFairmount took over running his father's business starting with a cow 3 months old! By 1915 dairy production had increased 50 fold thanks largely to investments in refrigeration technology being developed at Ideal Gas & Electric Works here in Minneapolis!! By 1922 there were 5500+ cows working at 160 barns producing 2 million bushels per year becoming one of America’s largest agricultural producers before being overtaken by ethanol production breakthroughing in 2006 !! Today we still produce large quantities Perdue chicken products using sustainable methods
In 1857, the first post office in Fairmont was established. In 1870, a flour mill was built and operated by the Fairmont Elevator Company. The company later became the Minneapolis and St. Paul Railroad. In 1916, theFairmont Hotel was built on Third Street in Fairmont and became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Minnesota.
