During World War II, many locals volunteered their time to serve in the war effort. Some notable individuals who helped contribute to this effort include Harry S Truman and Franklin D Roosevelt. Later on, Fairmont became home to numerous factories responsible for manufacturing goods used by American troops overseas. One such facility was Ford Motor Company which operated from 1945 until its closure in 2006. Today,Fairmount remains an important community with its own economy based around arts and culture as well as food production both locally and abroad
The first people to live in Fairmont were the Hennepin tribe of Dakota Sioux. The first settler was Nicholas Waterman, who arrived in 1857. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now Fairmont Lake. The town began developing around this time, and by 1860 there were several businesses and a few homes. In 1872, the town was established as a county seat with the addition of Fairmont Lake as its namesake. Fairmont has been through many changes over its history; it was briefly a railroad stop before becoming an agricultural community full of farmers and their families. It changed hands multiple times during its years as a settlement, but it always retained some degree of autonomy. Today,Fairmont is known for its beautiful lakeside scenes, historic architecture, and cultural attractions such as the art museum and Shakespeare theater.
