Fairmont is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is bordered by Goodhue County to the south, Douglas County to the east, Hennepin County to the north, and Park Rapids County to the west. In 1872, Major General James W. Wilson opened what became known as Fort Snelling on an eagle's nest in what is now Fairmont Township. Wilson had been called upon by President Abraham Lincoln to lead troops against Native Americans who were terrorizing settlers in Dakota Territory. In 1865, lumber baron Andrew J. Macoun built a home near where his company now stands on Red Cedar Boulevard in Fairmont Township for himself and his family; it remains one of only three homes remaining from that era in that township (the others being a post office and a Methodist church). The first school was established in 1870 under Superintendent George Bemis; four years later, it moved into its present building on First Street in Fort Snelling proper; brick buildings replaced wood during this time frame In 1876,Fort Snelling became an American military installation used primarily for guarding railroad crossings located along both banks of the Minnesota River while sections of Fort Snelling were constructed along Rice Lake also within rifle range of heavily populated Minneapolis/Saint Paul After World War I ended with Germany's defeat and Treaty of Versailles was signed which returning all German holdings east of the Mississippi River back to Austria (the land that includes present day Saint Paul), many soldiers who had served on fort snelling returned home and began farming there rather than returning westward again following World War I . This migration led to increased trade opportunities between Fort Snlling and Minneapolis/Saint Paul due not just to people living close together but because farmers could take advantage of transportation links available only through those cities due then Interstate 20 wasn't built yet

The first settlers in Fairmont, Minnesota were John and Martha Haggerty. They arrived in the early 1800s and started a small farm. In 1851, they married Lula Smith and moved to Fairmont. The couple started a grocery store and eventually built a house on the current site of the fairgrounds. In 1916, they donated land to Fairmont High School which was built on their foundation. The Haggerty family tradition of giving back to their community continues today.
