When Europeans first set foot in what is now Fairmont, Minnesota, in 1836, they were met with aLand of Lakes and Hills. The area was then part of the Dakota Sioux Nation. The land was settled by farmers and ranchers from Eastern Canada, who brought their traditions of hunting and fishing with them to the area. In 1855, a man named Hiram Burt founded the town of Fairmont on the banks of the Mississippi River. At that time, it was one of only two towns in Minnesota. Burt wanted to create an industry aroundtanning hides and selling goods to settlers along the river. By 1860, Fairmont had a post office and some businesses including a tannery, grocery store, blacksmith shop and three churches. The growth of the town caused problems for its founders because they didn’t have enough money to build more buildings or maintain them. In 1865, Hiram Burt sold his interest in Fairmont to John Tilton for $10K dollars. Tilton becameFairmont’s first mayor and started building what are now known as Tilton Hall (now called Old Main), Central Park and Guthrie Place (now called First Avenue). In 1875, Gifford Pinchot became superintendent of Public Instruction for Minnesota and he decided that schools should be built throughoutMinnesota so that children could learn about important aspects of our state’s history. To make this happen, Pinchot founded the State Historical Society in Minneapolis in 1876 which began planning for historical sites acrossthe state. In 1880 Fairmont had its own museum which currently houses artifacts from both local History as well as American History on display inside! By 1903, the towns of Maplewood and Hibbing had been organized within Fairmont as well. In 1912, the towns of Winona and Two Harbors were organized within Fairmont. In 1916, the towns of Falcon Heights and Marshall wereorganized within Fairontown. By 1924, all but one of the original cities withinFairmont had been disbanded or merged into other communities. By 1958, only Maplewood remainedwithin Fairmont. On January 1st of that year, both Maplewoodand Fairmount Park were incorporated as Cities with their own governments.Today,the cityof Maplewood is home to over 100 000 citizens whilethe cityofFairmount Park has over 200 000 residents
