Fairmont is a town in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,372 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in Fairmont were Norwegian fishermen who developed a small trading post on an island in Lake Superior called "Fjordskogen". In 1858, John Dickey founded what became Fairmont after purchasing land from the government for $1 per acre (yes plural). In 1871, lumber baron Solomon Northrop donated 5 miles (8 km) of railroad to serve as a main route between Minneapolis and Saint Paul; Fairmont was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1871.
