In 1854, Jesse Hennepin built a log cabin just south of present-day Fairmont on land that had been donated to him by Alexander Davenport. A post office called Fairmont was established in 1855, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1860, Cyrus McCormick & Co., an agricultural company led by McCormick Brothers grain merchants,Starting up at a time when farmers were using oxen to haul freight over long distances, organized a wagon road from Minneapolis through Hibbing to reach their mill sites near Duluth. This wagon road became known as the "McCormick Trail." The first store opened at Stevensonville in 1865; today's fair market is located within walking distance of both Stevensonville and Fairmont Village Historic Districts. By 1870 the population of Hibbing had reached 350 residents; however, due to railroad construction across county lines much of this growth stopped short - only 100 people lived within five miles of Hibbing by 1900 In 1901 there were 1,200 people living within 5 miles of Hibbing while railroad construction continued apace; however this changed with the opening of Interstate 94 which cut off most traffic between Minneapolis and St Paul . By 1910 only 300 people lived within 5 miles for all intents and purposes; however since then there have been brisk development rates with 1,600 residents living within 5 miles by 2000 Today's population stands at 2,500 people with many businesses clustered around downtown where nightlife takes center stage during weekdays while agriculture remains an important componentof local economy
