The first settler in Edina was Jacob Rasmusen on December 12, 1837. He and his family were the first to live in what is now Edina. In 1881, Orville N. Bean founded a flour mill in town which became one of the leading flour mills in Minnesota. The town's growth continued as it became an important agricultural center with its own Feeder Canal system and water supply from Lake Superior until it merged with Minneapolis on January 1, 1904 to form a new municipality called "Minneapolis." In 1912 the City Council established an experimental park located on Northeast 56th Street between Park Avenue and Lyndale Avenue for children living near downtown who could not afford or did not have enough space at home or elsewhere within the municipality; this park would become known as Wicker Park Children's Park today (). On October 11 of that year residents of Edina organized what would become known as "The Great North American Strike" against management by Armour & Company over wages that had been raised without regard to productivity (the strike eventually failed).
