Edina, Minnesota is a city of over 100,000 people located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1853 and became a town in 1856. The current boundaries were set by the merger of two neighboring towns on July 1, 1899. The original township was named for General James K. Polk and it extended from what is now the western edge of Edina to the east side of Minneapolis, and from what is now Harlem to south central St Cloud. The land that makes up today's Edina Township was first settled by Dakota Sioux and other Native Americans during the 1800s as part of their buffalo hunting expeditions into present-day Minnesota and Nebraska. In 1853, local farmer John Doane homesteaded land within what would become the City limits of Edina on the west bank of Ramsey Creek. In 1856, when Prairie Schoolers who had recently migrated to Minnesota were establishing themselves in town, they began purchasing land hereabouts including some which still stands today (e.g., Maplewood Place). A piece of this early structure still can be seen at 6th & Elm streets - an old gristyard built around 1840 by David Davenport which served as a meeting place for his neighbors before he moved away to start his own business - where residents would gather for religious services or social events until about 1870 when all transportation within town ceased due to wooden rails!
