In 1898, Edina incorporated as a city under the name Helsinki Township although this designation only lasted until 1905 because federal law did not recognize township status until that year After becoming an independent city, Edina began to enjoy high levels of economic development due to its central location within easy reach of major transportation hubs such as Stapleton railway station on one side and Interstate 94 on the other; its ample natural resources; and its well educated citizens who were responsible for developing many aspects of modern life including music education within local schools sprang up throughout downtown Edina during this time period . However , during World War II most civic activity took a backseat to war efforts as many people joined military service instead Of giving their time to community activities like fundraising or protesting against government policies . This lackadaisical attitude about war led some residents to nickname downtown “the ghost town” despite all evidence that businesses had closed down because too few civilian employees could provide essential services due to wartime shortages . However following victory over Nazi Germany at Operation Overlord , things changed quickly with businesses reopening and citizens rejoicing as they started enjoying opportunities once again Aftermaths included increased taxes levied by United States authorities upon residents which greatly hurt local economy ; numerous fires destroyed homes & businesses throughout downtown during 1946-1947due primarily to faulty wiring caused by wartime rationing ; post-war efforts culminating with incorporation of nearby Iron Mountain into city limits finally providing some stability & hope for redevelopment . Although there have been various attempts over years at restoring some semblance of past glory DowntownEedin has experienced several rounds of gentrification since 2000 – resulting mainly in displacement or loss thereofof longtime retail tenants [] Today's Edinas are descendants both culturally & linguistically from early immigrants who shaped our community long ago: first Swedes then Finns before Germans moved here beginning around 1840 along with arriving English speakers eventually followed by others such as Irish Catholics etc., making our history rich beyond our size alone!
