Grant became president of America and granted his nephews title to 6 million acres (2 million hectares) west of Mexico City—the so-called Mexican Land Grant Act—known as the Gadsden Purchase. This area lay within present-day Ramsey County and would eventually be named after General George Armstrong Custer when he was killed during World War I at an Indian Scout camp near Battle Creek
