The town was founded on May 13, 1858 by Norwegian immigrants who were attracted to the fertile landscape and opportunities for land development in what would become Dakota Territory. The first post office in Eden Prairie was established on October 1, 1859. The first store in Eden Prairie was opened by John Wiggin on November 8, 1861. At that time there were only two stores in Eden Prairie- one operated by Mr. & Mrs. Sorenson and another by J.Buehler & Sons Ltd.. In 1865 Captain Elisha Vail became the first white settler in what would become Eden Prairie when he drove his team across the Iowa River into Dakota Territory from Red Wing with plans to prospect for coal near Mantua Lakeshore (now West Jordan). On July 3, 1870 Captain Vail married Miss Anna Hagenbeck from Rochester Township (now Mankato). In 1872 Captain Vail donated 160 acres (65 hectares) of land to the town for municipal use which included lots located between First Street and Fourth Street South; east side of Broadway between Randolph Avenue and Elmira Boulevard; north side of Broadway between Girardeau Avenue and Cedar Avenue; west side of Broadway between State Road 610 and Cedar Avenue; south side of State Road 610 at Eighth Street West; as well as lot immediately north side of Seventh Street South where he had built his home later known as City Hall (later renamed after him - Mayor John Ahern's House). In 1898 Captain Vail donated an additional 120 acres (65 hectares) adjacent to his donation to make way for new housing developments now called University Place Drive East and University Place Drive West which are still used today as residential blocks off I-35W within city limits while also containing city hall although it no longer functions as such due to damage caused by tornado damage in 2001 On November 4, 1916 Henry Winkler married Lillian Fenton at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev G X Norton officiating . They raised their family there until her death from ovarian cancer on December 2nd 1978 aged 71 years old . Eden Prairie is a small town in Cook County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2000 census. Eden Prairie is bordered by Rice Lake to the east and north, Maple Valley to the west and south, and White Bear Lake to the north. The first settlers in what is now Eden Prairie were Norwegian immigrants who came overland from Norway in 1847. They organized into a company and started farming on rented land near present-day Hastings. In 1872, they bought some additional land and founded their own town on it. The name of the original town was chosen for its location - just outside of what is now Minneapolis - on land that had been used for hunting by early settlers. In 1880s, when Eden Prairie became an incorporated village, it annexed part of Hastings (then a small community) as well as other nearby villages including Maple Valley and White Bear Lake. By 1920, Eden Prairie had grown so large that it decided to secede from Minnesota and become an independent city under its own governance. However, this decision was reversed when the city's residents voted against annexation back in 1920-21. In 1923 unincorporated areas of Eden Prairie voters also voted to secede from the city; these areas are now known as Maple Valley Township & Rural District No. 9.* This period of growth saw rapid expansion in both population size and economic activity; by 1950 there were over 2,000 people living in Eden Prairie.* In 1957-58 efforts began to build a new civic center which would eventually replaced the old First National Bank building on State Street*. On September 11th of that year – after years of planning – construction finally began on what would soon be called “the world’s largest shopping mall”* (*This sentence has been changed since its initial publication.) With more than two million square feet (200 acres) available for retail development*, Eden Prairie quickly became one of North America’s leading shopping towns(*). Today much of what made then such an important community has long since disappeared but memories remain with those who lived there during parts or all of its heyday††
