The first settlers were men who had come from eastern Canada: George Armstrong Crouse, Ebenezer Cobbett, Jacob Riis, Hiram Sibley, Moses Wheeler and others arriving with families in wagons or carts overland from Ontario or Quebec during July 1865. The town grew quickly thanks to partnerships formed between various businesses and individuals: coal companies built blast furnaces onsite; lumber dealers set up sawmills; farmers produced hay and corn; post office clerks became lawyers; doctors started practice.; Rasmuson Grain Elevator was founded in 1876; Wabasha Lake Dam was completed in 1886 making it possible to irrigate agriculture near downtown and also providing water for streetlights.; Eden Pond opened in 1895;; Eden Prairie School District #2 opened its doors on October 15th 1896.) In 1902 when many farmers moved away from centralMinnesota due to drought they were followed by other workers from Chicago who began buying farm land hereabouts….. By 1912 there were over 100 homes & businesses here…. By 1920 there were over 1,000 homes & businesses here…. Today only a few hundred remain but their memory continues through small businesses that continue today like Heidegger’s Bakery which has been open since 1916., grocery stores like Safeway & Kroger., churches like First Lutheran Church & Bethlehem Lutheran Church., Heritage Park which contains a botanical garden,,and several golf courses……..virtually every day some aspect of life here remains unchanged or has changed very little since early days when people came seeking opportunity., . . . . There are no malls or shopping districts anywhere near Eden Prairie,,,, just farms where people raise cows/livestock etc.,and groceries store where you can get anything you want—- even organic!

Eden Prairie is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, on the Mississippi River. The population was 51,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is located within the Duluth-Superior County seat. Eden Prairie was founded in 1853 by Ole Hanson as a farming community on the banks of theMinnesota River adjacent to present day Eden Prairie Township. The name "Eden" came from an early settler's farmstead called "Hanson's Hope." The first post office in Eden Prairie was established in 1855, and the first store opened in 1859. In 1860, John Wabash built a sawmill at what is now known as Wisconsin Avenue and organized his settlement into a village called Wabasha Falls with twenty residents. This settlement became known as Eden Prairie after being renamed for Sir Charles Darwin's birthplace, Down House in Hampshire, England. In 1861, two brothers named Samuel Steen bought land east of present day Lyon Street and began to build a large rancho consisting of over 640 acres (24 hectares). They named their new community Eden Park after their home park near Down House where they spent much time during their free time while living away from their parents' house which they had just moved into completed construction with help fromtheir father-in-law Prentice Mathers along with other pioneer families who also contributed to its foundation including David Rice and James Weirich who donated land for school purposes only later selling it all back to Prentice Mathers for $1 million dollars making him one of Minneapolis' wealthiest citizens; however this did not stop him from becoming an active promoter of agricultural activity throughout his lifetime). The town plat was filed on May 22nd, 1862 under virtual rule by Governor Julius Custer because there were no settlers yet living hereabouts; but due to public outcry that followed news reports about Indian atrocities committed against white settlers recently - especially at Hastings County Courthouse - General Grant ordered Captain Jesse Davenport (the military governor)to send troops hither immediately; under orders Custer personally supervised fortification work culminating with erectionof five stone walls around town center late July 1862 – almost exactly one year after initial platted proposal – thereby markingDavenport’s presence hereabouts effectively establishing effective law & order & preventing further Indian depredations etc.; thus finally exercising some degree of self governance which Adam Nicolay had mooted centuries earlier when he suggested organizing frontier settlements into villages/townships etc., providinglocal officials with administrative resources necessary for efficient justice delivery etc.–a forerunnerof our current city government system! A&P grocery store was built on Third Avenue South near Plymouth Road around 1915 By 1924 it had been replaced by Burtons Supervalu Store serving until 1975 when it closed down due to another fire
